ASEAN Research Center was established in 2009 based on the achievements of the five sessions of “China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week” and years of ASEAN research at Guizhou University. The center was approved as “Key Research Bases on the Breeding Stage for Regional & Foreign Country Studies”, which is the only humanities and social science research base in Guizhou province supported by the Ministry of Education. In August 2013, ASEAN Research Institute was established at Guizhou University that administrates the ASEAN researches and education in Guizhou University.
ASEAN Research Institute takes “Grounding on Guizhou Province, Focusing on the Southeast Asia and Serving the need of the grand diplomatic strategy” as its mission. Its prime tasks include the scientific research, personnel training, social service and its own capacity construction. The research covers the culture, education, agriculture, economy, international politics and etc. around ASEAN countries.
The institute is vigorous on integrating all research resources and gathering the best scholars in this area at Guizhou University. Currently, it has 20 researchers (full-time and part-time). All of them hold doctorate degrees and 15 are full professors or associate professors.
In the next 5 years, the institute will focus on the scientific research and discipline construction, taking the resource and culture of ASEAN as its core research area and further broadening the research area to other fields. Moreover, it will also continue to work on the domestic and international academic exchange and cooperation and endeavor to build a distinctive research institute and a research platform for both multi-specialty and interdisciplinary studies.
